Assessment facilitator

Assessment is a too important engineering skill to not have in-house when developing software systems. To ensure its presence we have to have an explicit role: the assessment facilitator.

The facilitator is an engineer whose main goal is to ensure a smooth dialogue between the stakeholders and the system. He makes certain that the cost of assessment remains accessible for the stakeholders. He builds tools, he helps the others use them, and he mediates the assessment efforts.

The facilitator empowers. He does not dictate what is right and what is wrong. His job is to support the stakeholders in their assessments. In the end, it is the stakeholder that knows what is and what is not important in their context.

A facilitator needs to know how to:

  • identify assessment opportunities,
  • craft dedicated tools, and
  • facilitate the decision making.
